A GREAT END TO A GREAT YEAR
Fantastic. On a late September Saturday in Malone Golf Club, Belfast, Malahide Golf
Club ladies capped what has been an unbelievable year for the Club. In our 125th year,
we won the All Ireland Challenge Cup amidst scenes of wild excitement among a huge
crowd of Malahide supporters, having won the quarter final, semi final and final over
three successive days.
Not easy to single out one person in a team win like this, but special mention must be
made of Maire Falvey who was winning her second All Ireland medal, and was unbeaten
over the three days. A great performance by a great lady, particularly her win in the final.
The win was the culmination of a year which saw the Malahide men contest three
Leinster GUI Finals, the Junior Cup, Pierce Purcell Shield and All Ireland Fourball and our
U15 boys team also reached the Leinster Final. Unfortunately, we lost narrowly in all four,
but it was an incredible feat to reach four finals in one year.
If that was all we achieved it would have been remarkable, but we also won the
McDonnell Cup, the O’Grady Cup, the Fingal Seniors Trophy, the Fingal Junior League
as well as reaching the latter stages of many of the other interclub competitions.
Thanks to all involved in all teams competing for the club, team and panel members,
managers, caddies, supporters, our professionals, and everyone who played any part in
any of the teams.
It demonstrates what hard work, practice, good organisation and enthusiasm can
achieve. We have set ourselves a high standard for the future. With a little bit of luck, we
will turn some of the runner up trophies into pennants in the years ahead.
Roll on 2018.
