President’s Message The new design for a replacement bag room was presented to management together with an estimate of the cost of same. Due to the expected costs it was decided to have a relook at the project. The Review of Operations did take place. At the time of writing we are awaiting a Communications document for circulation to the members. I believe this Review has been very beneficial and when its recommendations are prioritised and implemented will prove to have been a worthwhile exercise. Towards the end of last year many members expressed concern at the lack of continuity in the management of the club. While a strategic plan was started some years ago in the club, I was unable to advance it very much during my term as Vice-President. I asked Sean Cormican to take on the task of completing the plan, with the result of improving the continuity of management so required. Sean accepted the challenge, set up a sub-committee who have been working very hard for the past few months to produce such a plan. It is expected that a strategic plan will be put to the members in the next few months. While it is the Captains who run the Men’s club and Ladies club i.e. look after our golfing needs, the success enjoyed by Malahide this year was most enjoyable. Two particular events stood out. The success of the Irish Mixed Foursomes team in reaching the All Ireland final was some achievement. The fact that we were beaten by Dooks a links course playing on their home course and the last match going to the 18th. while another played the 19th. is a testimony to the effort put in by all. The Ladies Intermediate team also reached an All Ireland final in Knightsbrook. In the final we were beaten by better golf and that is the way it should be. But it was not the golf itself that gave me such pleasure. It was the number of members who travelled to either, or both, venues to support their club. We travelled with “a light heart and a cheerful spirit”, we did our best and we left with “a light heart and a cheerful spirit”. My President Prize days were almost the highlight of my golfing year with large numbers taking part and close finishes each day. Bill Phelan won the mens prize while Ann Ryan won the Ladies prize. Both were worthy winners, and both hard sharpened up their game by playing on club teams earlier in the season. The prize giving was a most enjoyable evening at which most of the prize winners were able to attend. All during the year the members have shown both me and the Office of President respect and courtesy and I thank you one and all for that. Have I enjoyed my year? Some hard decisions had to be taken, there were some failures, but there were also the successes. I had an excellent hard working Management team around me who contributed well to discussions around the table. So did I enjoy my year? I did my best, I know that I did my best and so, yes I did enjoy my year. Malahide Golf Club has been good to me and I have given it some service I think someone else said something like that before!!!! So in wishing Sean Cormican well as incoming President I will just say thank you all for making it a good year.
