MC DONNELL CUP
In the first round Malahide had a bye so the
first foray was in the second round against
Royal Dublin and played on 28th May. Malahide
had four matches away and 3 at home. Away
wins for Noel Minihan & John Wallace and
Michael Ryan & Kieran O’Dwyer (both 3&2) set
the team on course for a win 4.5 to 2.5.
The third round was against Hollystown G.C. on
29th June with four home matches and three
away matches. Away wins for Noel Minihan
& John Wallace and Gary Curtin & Kieran
O’Dwyer set the team on course for another 4.5
to 2.5 win.
The semi-final was played on 30th July against
Corrstown. Malahide had four matches away
and 3 at home. A solid home performance and
a fabulous away win for Paul Murray & Kieran
O’ Dwyer who won 5 & 4 set the team on
course for yet another 4.5 to 2.5 win.
The final was over 2 legs with 7 matches in
each location. The 1st leg was on Sunday
27th August and played in The Island G.C.
Malahide took 4 points in The Island taking a
slender one-point lead into the 2nd leg.
The 2nd leg was played in Malahide Saturday
2nd September and the when the opening
pairs of Sean McInerney & Matt McMahon,
Garry Curtin & Seamus Meehan and Eamon
Donnelly & Bob Sandford all recorded wins the
pennant was destined for Malahide.
Overall result after 2 legs, was deemed to
be 9 to 5 for Malahide. No doubt had all
the matches gone the full course the win for
Malahide would have been greater. What was
important to all concerned was that Malahide
had successfully retained the McDonnell Cup.
